A Magic Thread To Speed Up Time

There is a book I keep near my desk. It is The Book of Virtues. It is a treasury of great moral stories edited with commentary by William J. Bennett. Usually, I read about men of power. Some wield the power of governments. Some wield the power of the clergy. What if there was a power over time? This morning, I turned to page 57 of The Book of Virtues. There, it contains a French tale of an old woman who gave a boy a magic thread to speed up time.

Mr. Bennett introduces the tale by mentioning how people impatiently want happiness. “The irony of their impatience is that only by learning to wait, and by a willingness to accept the bad with the good, do we usually attain those things that are truly worthwhile.”

What if

What if there was a power over time? Imagine if there was a magic thread that could speed up time. I suspect that just like the boy in the story, we would wake up with gray hair one day and wonder why we became old so fast. Yes, we may have fast-forwarded through the hard times, but while doing so, we missed out on the wisdom we would have gained while trudging through the pain. Some of you think that time has already moved so fast. Yet, you know that during difficult times, minutes seem like hours, and hours seem like days. Of course, we all naturally want to get through those difficulties as quickly as possible, but only Jesus has the power to help us.

This time of year is called Advent. It is a season of waiting with expectation and anticipation that Christ, the Messiah, is coming and will make all things new when He does. Of course, Christmas is a season when we think of Jesus’s birth as a human. He was called Immanuel (God with us). So, the beauty of Advent is that Christ is actually with us while we wait for the final consummation of all things.

We need not worry about current events or kings, queens, and bishops trying to improve this world as if they were pieces in a global game of chess. Nor do we need a magic thread that can control time. For as Paul said, God’s grace is sufficient.
