Most Things Change But God Doesn’t Change

Most things change. Case in point, this map illustrates an area I knew as a child and have traversed from time to time over the years. I used this website to create this picture. This little piece of the planet has moved a long way since I was born. It has traveled in a circle around the sun for 25,052 days at 66,600 miles per hour, which my smartphone’s AI computes to 40.1 billion miles. Additionally, the solar system’s orbit around the dense center of the Milky Way is traveling at 514,500 miles per hour, which calculates to 309 billion miles. In addition to that, the absolute movement of the Milky Way travels at 1.34 million miles per hour across the cosmic stage for a total of 808 billion miles.

I repeat, most things change. Thus far, I have only described the movement around the sun, around the galaxy, and across the universe. But other things have changed, too. The land I put my bare feet on when I played as a child was covered in petrified shells. My little part of the planet was once below sea level. Now, this piece of land is approximately 200 miles from the nearest ocean and is well over 900 feet above sea level. Of course, these geological changes happened long before my birth.

Most things change. Also, before my birth, the flora and fauna had changed. There was a time when big cats were more often sighted. There was a time when deer were seldom seen. A meeting of cattlemen gathered, and an individual warned that grassland prairies would disappear if grazing practices didn’t change. He was virtually laughed at.

Some time later:

My great-great-grandmother was alarmed when she saw an Indian looking down from a hill into the Cowhouse Creek watershed. The location of the Indian was described as underneath the lone tree on Hard Bargain Mountain. Hard Bargain Mountain has been covered with scrub cedars and little grass all of my life!

Isaiah Wrote:

A voice says,“Cry out.”

And I said, “What shall I cry?”

“All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

The word of truth:

James wrote:

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (emphasis added) He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Isaiah 43:

Most things change, but God doesn’t change. From ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hands. When I act, who can reverse it?

And then, I wrote this poem:

West of South Purmela

is west of where I was born

West of South Purmela

is where I go to mourn

West of South Purmela

is where I learned to drive

West of South Purmela

I feel like I’m the only one alive

West of South Purmela

Sometimes I feel gaunt

West of South Purmela

where Indian Spirits haunt

West of South Purmela

I never try to flaunt

West of South Purmela

I think a lot about the dead

West of South Purmela

Is not a place I dread

West of South Purmela

I go to clear my head

East of South Purmela my dad and I were born

East of South Purmela my dad died and was laid to rest

But west of South Purmela is where I learned to grieve
